In Ghana, Jamila Jennifer Douglas Onyejekwe has become a greatly respected lady in her local community for the work that she does for a number of health charities. Through local radio and newspapers she is frequently interviewed and campaigns to raise money to provide her local hospital with the radiotherapy equipment they need and medication to help the fight against cancer.

Jamila is only 38 but was sadly widowed when her husband died of cancer. After this traumatic time Jamila raised a large sum of money for the hospital where he died. She did this whilst supporting and caring for her two children who are 8 and 10 years of age. The money was gratefully received and her husband who owned a local taxi company would have been extremely proud of her.

It was in fact during the last few months when Jamila’s husband was in hospital that she met many other women who were in a similar position to herself. These families were struggling to deal with the illness as well as financially supporting themselves during this time of extreme hardship. Since her husbands death Jamila has provided valuable counselling and support to these families through community and outreach projects. Just by talking to local families and offering a friendly face and a sympathetic ear Jamila has earned her respected reputation.

At the moment Jamila is working tirelessly with numerous charities. She not only raises money, but gives the charity advice on how they can use local media to boost their fundraising. She still appears on local radio frequently talking about her experiences and urging people to give just a little bit of money to help families just like hers that are sadly affected by cancer. Jamila Jennifer Douglas Onyejekwe has turned her tragic experience into a positive and is an inspiration to many women in Ghana.
